The food and the ambiance were fantastic. We got the meat and vegetable Sambrusas. Recommend the meat but not the vegetable one. Our favorite was the vegetable combo. The flavors were well developed and complex. The okra was especially delicious, wrapped in the soft moist injera.

If you're ever in the neighborhood and want to try something new, check out New Eritrea. They are affordable, healthy, and tasty. And we left full and not weighed down. The staff were really friendly and explained how to eat since it was our first time eating Somalian food. I recommended trying this place in groups and ordering multiple meat dishes and picking out the plant-based dishes rather than opting for the veggie platter. The platter includes collard greens, lentils, and curry potato. The collard greens were my favorite, followed by the lentils. Also, get the sambusa.

Absolutely delicious! We stopped by for dinner on Wednesday for an early lunch. There were tables available and no wait. We got the vegetarian platter for 2, plus the meat dish (I think it was #1 on the menu). So, so good! Our order came with 3 pieces of injera, plus the veg platter was on top of injera as well. Simply amazing!! Service was courteous and quick. Can't wait to return.

Been out of the city for a few months - and this marvelous meal was me and my partners first outing back! Suitcases not even unpacked yet. Been meaning to try this place out, and I wish we had tried it sooner. Very kind service with a good local ambiance. The veggie platter for 2 is delicious and meant to be eaten/scooped up by hand using the injera (sponge-like bread). Every bite is delicious, and it's all veggies. Can't really ask for more. If you haven't tried this type of cuisine, I assure you it's quite the experience and worth it. At ~$36 split between two people, it's definitely not breaking the bank for the variety of flavors you get to try. They also do have a full bar which offers an Ethiopian beer - I just wasn't in the mood for one today. But, I'll be back soon.

Y'all Ethiopian food is my new thing. If you like flavor, if you like ethnic foods, this is it! I'm obsessed with it ever since I tried it for the first time like 2 months ago over in Oakland and I've been SEARCHING for an SF spot that can rival it since, and this is it! I came with my sister on a weekend for a very early dinner, and we chose to sit in the back where it's like an enclosed glass patio--very bright, airy. We decided to get the vegetarian combo so that we could try a bit of everything, and then added on a beef dish -- this all comes out served on one large plate, on top of injera (like a sourdough, fermented crepe). You eat with your hands here!! If you haven't had Ethiopian cuisine before, you gotta wash your hands and under your nails--that's step 1. step 2 is to rip off a piece of the injera and use it to scoop up the delicious blobs of spiced veggies and meat in front of you and then plop it into your mouth. The man that was serving us that night was very pleasant and nice. 5/5!

Omg! This is my 3rd time trying Ethiopian food and I'm so glad I did! My gf has been coming here for years and has a great palate so I trusted her. Boy was she right! Our service was exceptional and the chef/owner and his beautiful sister were so warm and attentive. Even the Vegan dishes had so much spice and flavor. The meat tar tar was cooked perfectly well and seasoned the way we wanted. We also had South African wine which was a perfect pair for our dinner. Not sure what we ordered as I had my gf order 3-4 entrees. We will be back for sure

I've never had Eritrean cuisine before, but this place was an amazing introduction to the flavors. We came in for a somewhat early dinner, and it was already pretty full, but we didn't need to wait which was nice. We were seated and ordered the kilwa and meat combo as well as a lentil sambusa. The portions were perfect for 2 (maybe just a little too much, we were stuffed). This is also definitely a sharing kind of meal. Eat everything together! The lentil sambusa was so good. It's a little crispy on the outside, and the lentils are flavored super well. Comes with a spicy dipping sauce as well. 10/10 yums The kilwa and meat combo platter we ordered came with injera which was delightfully fluffy and silky, with a slight sour flavor which worked so well as a base for all the meats and sauces. Everything was amazing, but we loved the lamb the most (was part of the meat combo). Overall, really yummy! Can't believe I've never tried Eritrean food until now. I've been missing out for sure!

I used to frequent New Eritrea when I lived on the west side of the city. I moved to the east side, and then the pandemic happened. My friend and former roommate decided it was time to go back. And the food is just as good as we remembered it! I got the yellow split peas and I ate everything on my plate. The split peas had a savory, earthy flavor and it paired well with the sweetness of the cooked carrots. And then there's the delicious sourness of the injera bread that ties it all together. We also ordered the mixed veggie sambusas, which were also delicious. They were crispy and full of veggies. The sauce it came with gave it some heat. And I had to order the honey wine. It wasn't overly sweet and was definitely needed to wind down a long work week. Service was great as usual. The staff are super friendly and welcoming. They haven't changed the decor, and I like that. It's still a mom-and-pop shop and the focus is serving excellent food. My friend and I got there before the dinner rush, and I could see that phone/online orders were coming in. So I'm happy that they're still doing well after the pandemic. If you've never tried Eritrean food, then I highly recommend you dine here first. You can order your own entree or get a bigger plate to share with friends/family. And you eat with your hands btw, which makes the dining experience much more fun.

Super friendly server and staff. Attentive and welcoming . The ambiance is clean and the vibe is casual.. the back dining area has a skylight that would be amazing on one of those sunny SF days! The star of the show is the African. Cuisine of Eritrean and Ethiopian original flavors. We had 3 people in our group and ordered the sambusa ground beef appetizer to share and a 3 meat combo platter as well as a vegetarian combo platter. Everything is served with an airy bread called injera. See the photos and videos for the full experience. JYW recommends

It's been months and I'm still dreaming about that meat sambusa. Honestly everything here was amazing, I'm still dreaming about all of it! We ordered the meat sambusa, which got better and more flavorful with each and every bite, the vegetarian combo, Asa Kilwa (cat fish), and a bottle of South African Sauv Blanc. The vegetarian combo came with a set 6 of the vegetarian entrees, all of which were packed full of flavor. I'm not a big fan of catfish, I think it usually lacks flavor, but this was some of the more flavorful catfish I've had. And, when the catfish was mixed with the hamli (collard greens)...WOW, amazing. Aside from the delicious food, another impressive/cool thing about this spot was the back atrium-like room. I loved the glass ceiling and all the natural light coming through. Also a super casual spot - most people were in t-shirts or sweatshirts. I will definitely be coming back here and ordering both the sambusa and vegetarian combo again, but next time I'm excited to try another meat dish.
